MISHIKA SINGH, ADVOCATE

Founder and Trustee

Mishika’s work has primarily been focused on the rights of women. In 2011, Mishika was involved in organizing the first-ever Slut Walk of Asia in New Delhi along the lines of the Toronto Slut Walk (which eventually went on to become a global movement). In 2012, after the infamous Delhi Gang Rape case, Mishika was invited to the Prime Minister’s Office to comment of the proposed changes in the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure Code as a part of the Justice Verma Committee Report, which later on led to the amendment of both these Acts in 2013. In 2013, as part of her internship with Lawyers Collective, Mishika researched on the laws and guidelines existing in India around sexual harassment at workplace. After graduating in law in 2014, Mishika has primarily worked with victims of domestic violence from the marginalized section. Alongside her legal practice, Mishika has also regularly been organising legal workshops with domestic workers residing in various slum areas in Delhi. Between 2018-2019, Mishika volunteered with Kat Katha, an organization that works with sex-workers in the red-light district around GB Road. Mishika has completed her Feminist leadership Training from Crea in 2018 and has been a change-maker with Change.org since 2018, where she has successfully created petitions related to human rights and the rights of women. In 2019, Mishika formed an informal collective, called ‘Lawyers for Detainees’, which is a pan-India collective of lawyers engaged in defending the rights of citizens protesting against the establishment. After the riots hit Delhi in February 2020, Mishika and a few of her colleagues began working closely on the issue of compensation to be disbursed by the State with around 400 riot survivors.

Mishika holds a Bachelors in Journalism and Bachelors of Laws from the University of Delhi. She also holds an LLM from the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (in association with University of Peace) where she studied Transnational Crime and Justice.
